What You Need To Start Boogie Boarding

Overview

It is important before you start boogie boarding,  that you know what a rip current is and what to do if you’re in one.  On top of that, you need to know how to swim and feel comfortable in the surf.  When going boogie boarding, you will have to swim out to catch the right wave.  The first wave often isn’t the right wave, so you’ll have to go under and/or through multiple waves before you catch your first one.  This is why being able to swim and be comfortable in the surf is important.  In addition the above, below is a list of the items you need to start boogie boarding.

Boogie Board

Board

Most boogie boards are relatively similar for beginners.  So we recommend sticking with one of those to get started, but make sure you get the right board size. Loggerhead’s Beach Bodyboard is a great example.

Size

General rule of thumb is making sure the board when touching the ground reaches near your belly button and the width is near the distance between your two shoulders. For further reference, you can see in Loggerhead’s Beach Bodyboard listing, it breaks down three separate sizes for riders based on their weights.

Leash

  • This is the most critical piece of gear that you need to have.  You need the leash on you when you go out as it keeps your board close to you.  In the event you get knocked off your board, you want to be able to pull it back.  Additionally, the boogie board aids riders in helping them float.
  • This usually comes with the boogie board, but you sometimes may have to install it yourself.
  • Often boogie boarders will strap the leash on their wrist or their bicep.

Waterproof clothing

  • Ideally a wet suit or a rash guard. Either way, make sure it is clothing that fits.  If your britches are too loose, the waves will take them right off.

Wet suit

  • There are a few benefits to wearing a wet suit over just a bathing suit.
  • Prevents rashes and chafing from riding on the board.
  • Provides sun protection.
  • Keeps you warm.  Depending on where and when you’re boogie boarding this can be a necessity.
  • Protects you from jelly fish.
  • Protects you from sand and shells if you’re riding the waves toward the shore or if you get caught in a wipe out where you are pushed along the ocean floor.

Swim fins

  • Fins are helpful for giving you an extra boost for paddling out towards the waves, more speed and control when riding the waves.
  • As a beginner, don’t worry about using fins.  Get used to operating without fins as you learn.

Wax

  • You can use wax alongside the sides of your boogie board to help you stick to the board easier.  As a rider, you never want to fall off the boogie board, especially during mid wave.  By using wax, this will help prevent that from happening; however, for beginners, you can learn first without using wax.

Sun screen

  • Any sunscreen works here.  We prefer Sun Bum Original as it is convenient to pack, water resistant, easy to apply, and doesn’t leave that usual sticky feeling residue on your hands after you apply it.

Goggles

  • These can be helpful, especially if you’re new to boogie boarding and haven’t done many duck dives before.  Instead of having to close your eyes for every wave you go under, wearing goggles will save you the trouble.  They will also prevent any water from the waves from splashing into your eyes.
